SUETr Multi Media Deposits Event

Monday 30th March 2009 , York St John University, York

http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/events/suetr-multimedia-2009/

Initially, many institutional repositories focussed on research content and that tended to lead to text-based deposits. Now, though, as repositories settle into the framework of the institution, many more demands are being made on the IR manager to handle sound/music, moving image and still image files within the repository. 21st century research is no longer purely text-based but incorporates many different ways of transmitting and capturing information as part of academic research. In addition, as the brief of the IR expands to include supporting deposits of theses or linking in to VLEs, the lines are becoming blurred between teaching and learning objects and research deposits. And again, this is prompting an increase in non-text-based items coming into the IR.

This event offers a practical approach to multimedia deposits, looking at handling non-text-based files, copyright implications and other issues surrounding still and moving images, music/sound and teaching and learning objects. The day will be a mixture of case studies and practical workshops. There will also be time in the day to network with other IR staff and with the speakers. This event is free and open to all UK HEI staff, although preference will be given to SUE project staff if the event is over subscribed.

The events are aimed at staff who are either setting up an institutional repository (IR) or are already running an IR and are wanting to develop their repository further. The programme aims to support IR staff with practical sessions from people working in relevant fields and also to facilitate networking among the UK HEI repositories community.

The 4th International Conference on Open Repositories

18-21 May 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia

http://or09.library.gatech.edu/

The 4th annual international Open Repositories Conference will be held May 18th - 21st, 2009 at the Georgia Institute of Technology Hotel and Conference Center and Global Learning Conference Center at Technology Square in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference will be hosted by the Georgia Tech Library and Information Center.

Repositories increasingly play a pivotal role in the emerging information landscape. Through the format of blending open user group meetings for DSpace, Fedora, and Eprints, followed by general conference sessions that cover cross-cutting and overarching issues, Open Repositories attempts to create an opportunity to explore the challenges faced by user communities and others in today's world.

OAI6, the 6th Workshop on Innovations in Scholarly Communication

17-19 June 2009, Geneva, Switzerland

http://www.unige.ch/workshop/oai6/

The workshop will follow the successful format of previous workshops mixing practical tutorials, presentations from cutting-edge projects and research, discussion groups, posters, and an intense social programme to maximise interaction and communication. It will be possible to register for a part or all of the programme.

The workshop is aimed at those involved in the development of open access (OA) repositories and who can influence the direction of developments either within their institution, their country or at an international level - that includes technical developers of OA bibliographic databases and connected services, research information policy developers at university or library level, funding bodies concerned with access to the results of their research, OA publishers, and influential researchers keen to lead OA developments in their own field.

Previous workshops have built a strong community spirit and the event is a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and contact details with the wide range of people connected to the OA movement. The OAI series of workshops is one of the biggest international meetings in this field and takes place roughly every two years.
